As part of the practical lesson, students of the Institute of Agrobiology and Natural Resources visited the regional operator for the management of solid municipal waste «Eco-City».
The purpose of the excursion was to study the organization of the waste management process on the territory of the city of Stavropol. The students got acquainted with a fundamentally new scheme of garbage collection and disposal, where a regional operator selected on a competitive basis is responsible for the entire recycling cycle — from the container to the landfill. The company's specialists showed the process of receiving and sorting waste and the work of the waste sorting line, told about the use of complex technology, including the reception, sorting of waste with partial recycling, selection of waste fractions. The remaining non-volatile fractions «tails» are compacted by pressing and subsequently placed on the landfill. All useful fractions — paper, metal, textiles, glass, plastic — are extracted during sorting for recycling and reuse as secondary resources.
The initiators of the event were Mikhail Babansky, Director of TSLATI for the Stavropol Territory, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Elena Stepanenko and Valeria Khalikova, assistant of the Department of Ecology and Landscape Construction.
