Nikolay Seryoi, a student at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology, became one of the grant holders of the federal Student Startup competition. His project to process the larvae of the Black Lion fly was supported as part of the fifth wave, the amount of funding amounted to 1 million rubles.
In total, 32 projects of Stavropol State University students were supported within the framework of the federal Student Startup competition. One of them was the project of Nikolai Seroy from the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology for the processing of larvae of the Black Lion fly.
The grant will allow, together with the team of the laboratory of Feed and Metabolism, to form an insect breeding insectarium at the university. The final product will be a low-fat protein concentrate from fly larvae. The raw materials will stand out in the market for their high protein content, speed and environmental friendliness of production. Its inclusion in the feed base of farm animals will significantly increase the efficiency of fattening.
In addition, in the process of their vital activity, the larvae process and thereby disinfect the substrate in which they live, producing vermicompost. And fat waste from the production of protein concentrate can be used in cosmetology. Thus, the production will be as waste-free as possible.
— We will support our young scientists at all stages of the project implementation. I am convinced that production will become a new word in the formation of combined diets for farm animals and will become a reliable tool for our farmers,» said Vladimir Sitnikov, Rector of StGAU.
